Orienteering Waikato Summer Series Update

2010 was always going to be a challenging time for Orienteering Waikato as a club. The club really needed to run more regular events, which is a very difficult thing to do when there aren't too many people to help.
So in the end of 2009 we got into mapping Hamilton and started holding some 45 minute mini-rogaines. This started as a series of afterwork events (about 5 in total) and whilst we only had about 10-20 people at each, because everyone started at once and finished together there seemed to be a good culture at events.
Coming into 2010 we decided we would hold a bigger "Summer Series". With only 5 'park' maps, we needed to supplement this with mini-rogaines. Well following the initial burst of a few mini-rogaines, and now that we have finished our park events, everyone seems to have been enjoying it so far. We are now back into our mini-rogaines. We have presently planned for 4 mini-rogaines to finish the series off, but if demand is there then we will run a few more. The only limiting factor is of course that eventually it gets too dark too early to run afterwork events.
So the mapping is continuing, planning events is continuing and best of all everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. After losing a few families from last years membership (due to moving away etc) we are actually well up on membership considering those facts. Of course we did change our pricing structure which has contributed to it as well, but the main contributor has been the fact that we are running regular events and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.

The 2010 Orienteering Waikato Summer Series is now back into its Mini Rogaines, so we have a bit of a review of how things are going so far...
Results from Taharepa street sprint 28th Feb

What a hot day!! It was a lovely day , but we all learnt that a street sprint in Taupo does involve some climb unless its along the lakeside reserve area. Without street signs on the map, you also had to keep in close touch with features too. Thanks to Chris who is steadily mapping the whole of Taupo from the old airport map to Nukuhau.

ROC "Vampire" Event Moved

Confirming the ROC Vampire Event, postponed last month because of atrocious weather, is all go for the new date of Saturday 25 July. The event starts (mass start) at 7.00pm at the Redwoods Visitor Centre, Long Mile Drive, Rotorua.
