Central Districts Schools Orienteering event

The Central Districts Schools Orienteering event will be held on farmland near Rotorua on Friday 14 May. Trident High school from Whakatane and Cambridge High school have been seen training for this event, and Piopio High school often have strong teams. Is your school entered ?

Competition notes:
1.Teams must have at least 4 students per team, but preferably 6.
2.For each team, the best 4 individual results will be added together to give the overall team result.
3.Mixed teams are allowed, but will compete in the boys grade.
4.The Intermediate grade can be a mix of year 7/8 students and Secondary grade a mix of any year 9 -13 students.
5.Schools may enter more than one team in the boys or girls grades.
6.There will be certificates for the top teams in each grade.
Orienteering notes:
1.It will be assumed that many competitors will have had little experience of orienteering and the event will be set accordingly.
2.The ability to use a compass is useful but not essential. Being able to orientate a map using ground features and an understanding of map symbols will however be necessary.
3.A five colour map with the course marked will be provided for each student. Students will require running clothing, shoes suitable for mixed terrain and a watch. Students should come prepared for all weather conditions.

What a hot day!! It was a lovely day , but we all learnt that a street sprint in Taupo does involve some climb unless its along the lakeside reserve area. Without street signs on the map, you also had to keep in close touch with features too. Thanks to Chris who is steadily mapping the whole of Taupo from the old airport map to Nukuhau.

ROC "Vampire" Event Moved

Confirming the ROC Vampire Event, postponed last month because of atrocious weather, is all go for the new date of Saturday 25 July. The event starts (mass start) at 7.00pm at the Redwoods Visitor Centre, Long Mile Drive, Rotorua.
